New Cllr also selected as party candidate in Stranorlar Electoral Area

At a packed Sinn Féin convention in The Old Courthouse, Lifford, last evening, Ballybofey based, health care professional, Cora Harvey was selected to replace recently retired Cllr Tony McDaid on Donegal County Council. She was also selected as the party candidate for the new Stranorlar Electoral Area in next year's county council election.

Cora was proposed for cooption on to the council by outgoing Cllr Tony McDaid and seconded by Letterkenny Town Councillor, Gerry McMonagle and supported by the over 100 delegates present unanimously. She was proposed as the candidate for the Stranorlar Electoral Area by Patrick Gildea and seconded by Donal Ward and again supported unanimously.

In her acceptance speech, Cora Harvey, joined previous speakers in paying tribute to Tony McDaid. She described him as "a man of great integrity, a man with huge empathy and compassion for the disadvantaged and a champion for those in poverty". She gave a firm commitment to continue to serve the constituents across Letterkenny Electoral Area that Tony has served to the best of her ability.

Mrs Harvey said:

"I am proud to accept the role as Councillor and candidate for the only serious all Ireland party. The only party with a clear republican programme of unity and equality in line with the promise of the 1916 proclamation".

"When we look around Ireland today, we can see that our debt fuelled wealth was not utilised to deliver affordable childcare to working families, a health service worthy of the name, or smaller class sizes for our children and teachers to flourish. It is a disgrace to see children and their teachers in prefabs today in this supposedly wealthy country".

"Sinn Féin are committed to the sustenance and development of public services. We reject the handing over of our precious public services to private for profit operations. Services like education and health should serve the public good not shareholders dividends".

"I look forward to joining the Sinn Féin team of elected representatives in Donegal to fight for the thousands who have joined or rejoined the dole queues across this county in recent times. The people of this county deserve so much better than the decades of neglect we have experienced".

In a rousing concluding speech, Senator Pearse Doherty said:

"Donegal Sinn Féin has already commenced the process of candidate selection and when that process is completed in the next six weeks, it will be a truly superb panel of candidates with experience, talent, and energy. When we see the packed conventions already, it is clear that our party is more determined and stronger than ever here in Donegal".
