Donegal Sinn Féin to review targets after presidential election campaign

Published: 3 November, 2011

Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has said that the increased Sinn Féin vote achieved by Martin McGuinness last week has elevated the most progressive political party in Donegal to a position where it must reassess its electoral targets and set even more ambitious goals for the council elections in 2014.

Cllr Murray said;

"Martin McGuinness's recent success represents the highest Sinn Féin vote in the history of the state and has even surpassed the 2011 targets that had been set by the party.

"At a welcome home party for Martin at the Cultúrlann in Derry, Sinn Féin national chairman, Declan Kearney explained that if we received a similar vote in a general election, we would be celebrating the election of something in the region of 25 TDs.

"The diffuse nature of the result presents Sinn Fein with enormous opportunities as we continue to assess our strategy for the 2014 local elections.

"Our challenge is to now build upon this result by capturing this momentum, by preparing the pathway for the emergence of passionate and idealistic young people dedicated to the service of their communities and build our Sinn Féin team in Donegal County Council as well as Buncrana, Letterkenny, Ballyshannon and Bundoran Town Councils.

"If we want to deliver change, we can never sit still; we need to constantly review our position, continue to recruit new members and facilitate new people to become public representatives in our party.

"The next 2 and a half years will be an exciting time for republicanism. I would encourage anyone who agrees with our view on Irish politics to join us as we continue to move forward."
