Central Island/Barrier for Four Lane Carriageway in LetterkennyPublished: 31 December, 1969
Letterkenny Mayor welcomes commitment from County Council to proceed with pavement and centre barrier/island between Dry Arch Roundabout and the Polestar Roundabout this year.
Cllr Gerry Mc Monagle has welcomed the commitment from Donegal County Council to proceed with the long awaited safety measures at the four lane carriageway between the Polestar Roundabout and the Dry Arch roundabout. It will he said eliminate all but one of the existing right hand turning lanes. The Cullion Road will be the exception and will be retained, at least initially.
Cllr Mc Monagle said it is envisaged that Letterkenny Town Gardner will be involved and consulted to ensure a suitably aesthetic centre island layout is developed. As part of the pavement works the NRA have asked the council to examine the roundabout layout and capacity with a view to improving the traffic flow especially at peak times.
To help with this a traffic light system suggested in the recent LUTS study which reported on traffic flow in and around Letterkenny and recommended Traffic Lights for both the Polestar and Dry Arch Roundabouts will be considered as part of the pavement works or may follow during the Phase 2 of the project in 2012.
Cllr Mc Monagle concluded by saying these safety improvements in conjunction with the proposed speed limit reduction on the road will go a long way to making this very busy carriageway a lot safer for road users and pedestrians alike.
