Doherty proposes vote of no confidence in Minister for Finance

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has today called a motion of no confidence in the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan in the Seanad. However the vote could no go ahead as the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, in what Senator Doherty described as an act of political protectionism refused to recognise a formal seconding of the motion. Sinn Féin opposes extension of Bank Guarantee Scheme in Seanad

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has tonight opposed the extension of the bank guarantee scheme. Speaking in the Seanad Senator Doherty said that the Government needs to get the message - their policy of bank bailouts and cow-towing to the wealthy elite has failed. With almost half a million people unemployed they need to start bailing out the people and not the banks. Read full article

Prescription charges should not go ahead - Doherty

Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has made a last-minute call on the Minister for Health & Children Mary Harney not to proceed with the imposition of prescription charges for medical card holders which are due to come in this Friday 1st October. He described the charges as "a tax on illness" and a "bureaucratic nightmare" and said that the HSE has still not fully worked out how people would be refunded if they pay over the €10 monthly maximum in charges. Donegal to Glencolumbkille bus service must be restored - Doherty

Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has called on the Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs Pat Carey, to act immediately to ensure that the Donegal to Glencolumbkille bus service be restored in full to the people of south and west Donegal. Senator Doherty has welcomed the intervention by the Council for the West who have today written to Minister Carey asking him to urgently address this issue. Read full article

Minister must act immediately to alleviate grants crisis - Doherty

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Education Senator Pearse Doherty has called on the Minister for Education and Skills Mary Coughlan to act immediately to alleviate what is likely to be another grants crisis.   The Senator said that in Donegal County Council alone, of the 650 first time applicants the vast majority have not yet been processed, meaning that the majority of new applicants will not receive their grant when it is due out in mid-October. OECD report condemns Government's record on Education - Doherty

Speaking in response to the publication of the OECD report, Education at a glance 2010, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Education Senator Pearse Doherty has said that the report highlights what we already know - that this government is in no way serious about education and has presided over a sector which is in a funding crisis.   The Senator said that the government needs to "get real" about education and has demanded a return to free education as of right.   Read full article
