Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty will this week take part in the Seanad debate on the Finance Bill - the bill which gives affect to government measures as proposed in Budget 2010, a budget which has crippled the ordinary worker and imposed massive cuts on vital public services.
Pearse Doherty has submitted a number of key amendments which would, he says, see the wealthiest in society pay the most and ensure that a financial stimulus is made to create and retain jobs and to get the economy back on track. Read full article

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty today launched a set of proposals aimed at tackling the problem of youth unemployment. Senator Doherty said, if implemented, Sinn Féin's proposals would get 50,000 people under the age of twenty-five off the dole immediately and create many more jobs in the years ahead. The proposals include a specific youth jobs fund, measures to facilitate self employment and a specific focus on growth sectors such as digital media, tourism, green jobs and agri-food. Donegal Sinn Féin, Senator Pearse Doherty has called on the government to amend the "Free rail scheme for EU citizens over 66 years" to allow those to access free bus services that complete or begin their journey in County Donegal. Senator Doherty made the call in the Seanad days after it was announced by the Taoiseach that his Government was to introduce a free rail scheme for all EU citizens over the age of 66 in an effort to boost tourism. Senator Pearse Doherty has welcomed the belated government move to ban a number of substances currently on sale in headshops but said the move is still inadequate. Senator Doherty presented today a comprehensive set of proposals which he claims are a real solution to the problem of head shops and said that if adopted, his proposal would effectively bring about conditions in which head shops as we know them could no longer exist.
