Need for harmonisation of labour laws, tax regimes and currency
Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has said differing tax regimes, currencies and labour laws across Ireland are hampering the development of a real all Ireland economy.
Speaking at the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement today Senator Doherty said cross border shopping will continue to cause problems on either side of the border until such a time as an all Ireland economy is developed and expanded. Read full article

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has criticised the Minister for Education and Science Batt O'Keeffe for failing to intervene in the situation whereby, due to the unprecedented number of student grant applications, many third level students in Donegal will now have to wait until January to receive their student grant payments, these students are unregistered and are being left without access to many services in the colleges. Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has accused Fine Gael of abandoning its policy on Seanad reform for the third time this year. Senator Doherty was speaking today after Fine Gael Senators voted in favour of not only retaining the Seanad but of increasing the number of Senators from 60 to 65 and the number of Taoiseach's nominees from 11 to 12. Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has accused Fine Gael of making up their policy on Seanad reform as they go along. Senator Doherty described the Seanad as elitist and undemocratic and said it should be abolished in its current form. However Senator Doherty said Fine Gael has had three different positions on Seanad reform this year with Enda Kenny only just launching an Oireachtas reform policy in March this year in which the party called for the retention of sixty member Seanad.
