New electricity levy must be dropped - MacLochlainn

Sinn Féin Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn has demanded that the
government abandon its plans to introduce a new levy which he says will push electricity prices up by 5%. The Donegal Deputy Mayor and Mayor of Buncrana said that such a levy was untenable at a time when many families were already struggling to meet their bills.

Cllr MacLochlainn said:

"The government must abandon its plan to introduce a new electricity levy which will drive up costs by a further 5%. People who are already struggling to pay their electricity bills are astounded that, once again, they are going to be hit a new tax.

"This is just another way that the government is forcing ordinary people to pay for the financial deficit created by pouring €25billion into Anglo-Irish Bank.

Cllr MacLochlainn also stated that this move could lead to further job losses as the price hike will hit struggling businesses:

"It simply doesn't make sense to proceed with such a levy. The solution is very simple, stop pouring money into banks and the pockets of developers and there will be no need to invent new methods of taxing the public."
