30 jobs lost at Oatfields
Published: 20 August, 2010
Letterkenny Sinn Fein Councillor Gerry Mc Monagle has described today's announcement by Oatfields of 30 job redundancies at the factory as a devastating blow for the workforce.
The Company has announced it will be looking for 30 redundancies in the workforce from the end of October. This news could not come at a worse time for the workers at Oatfield with Christmas just around the corner and unemployment in Donegal continuing to rise there will be little or no prospects for other employment opportunities for those being made redundant.
The decision has been forced upon the company by a number of factors. Increased international competition in the marketplace has put additional pressure on smaller companies like Oatfield. The sterling crisis led to falling production volumes and this, coupled with increased production costs, has led to this unfortunate decision.
Cllr Mc Monagle welcomed the commitment from Oatfield's that they will begin discussions immediately with unions on a financial package and other support measures to help all those facing redundancy.
Oatfield has been a major employer in Letterkenny down through the years and is very much part of the fabric of Letterkenny. It would be sad to lose this factory. They have been a great ambassador for Letterkenny down through the years and their products are well renowned the world over.
Cllr Mc Monagle concluded by saying he was heartened by the companies resolve and commitment to do all in their power to ensure that the factory continues its operations at the Letterkenny plant.
