Derry's 'City of Culture' success will have benefits for entire Northwest - Donegal Mayor
Published: 16 July, 2010
Sinn Féin Mayor of Donegal, Cllr Cora Harvey has paid tribute to all those involved in Derry's successful City of Culture bid and has said that Donegal will also benefit from their achievement.
Cllr Harvey said,
"On behalf of the people of Donegal I want to congratulate Derry on this wonderful achievement. Derry is a city steeped in tradition - not just its proud Irish culture but its vibrant array of international cultures also. It is a worthy winner and has done the people of Ireland proud.
"Derry can now look forward to huge investment and regeneration which has the potential to create thousands of new jobs in the northwest. This is of course welcome news for the people of Donegal who will also benefit from this much needed jobs boost in the region.
Cllr Harvey added that this announcement will also create an opportunity to profile the whole northwest as a Cultural Capital of Ireland.
"I would pay particular tribute to the cultural forum of the County Development Board of Donegal County Council who made a submission to the bid by invitation, outlining the opportunities and benefits which exist for partnership and cooperation. I would also like to acknowledge former Mayor of Derry Paul Fleming who worked tirelessly during his year in office to promote his city and bring about this success."
