Sinn Féin Cllr Gerry MacMonagle has congratulated Derry on its successful 'City of Culture' bid.

The Letterkenny urban councillor said;

"Like thousands of others across Ireland I watched the announcement of Derry's success with absolute delight.

"This creates an opportunity for the all the young artists and musicians in this region to showcase their talents to a huge audience as the cultural world focuses on Derry.

"As a native of the city I am aware and proud of Derry's huge wealth of talent and culture.

"The fact that this announcement came so soon after the findings of the Saville Report were released shows that Derry is a city which can achieve anything. It is a city which, despite its painful past, can look to a bright future and celebrate its rich cultural heritage.

Cllr McMonagle also said that the success of Derry's bid will attract large investment and create a much needed jobs boost for the entire northwest region.

"The people of Donegal will also celebrate the recognition of their neighbouring 'City of Culture'. This will have wide ranging benefits for this entire region. It's is an all-round greats news story and I pay tribute to all those involved in bringing about this magnificent achievement."
