Mc Monagle calls on council to act on residential parking in Letterkenny.
Published: 11 September, 2006
Speaking at Monday nights Letterkenny Town Council meeting, Sinn Fein Cllr Gerry Mc Monagle called on the council to do something about the increase in parking in many of the residential areas around the town, which is leading to an increased inconvenience for the residents.
Cllr Mc Monagle said:
"Whether you live in Ard O Donnell, the Back Road, Binnion Avenue, or Oatfield Terrace etc, the story is the same. Increased all day parking, which in some cases is making life hell for residents. The lack of access to ones property and danger for the children and elderly residents who have to take their life in their hand each time they wish to cross the road between parked cars is a daily occurrence and seems to be on the increase".
"These last few months I have been inundated with residents from different areas complaining about this growing problem. It's about time we in the council did something about it and if it means creating further no parking areas with stickers for residents so be it. I am also calling on the council to employ another Traffic Warden to ensure that motorist adhere to any new laws we enact. Two traffic wardens for a town the size of Letterkenny is no longer viable we need more support for our existing wardens who are both doing an excellent job".
Cllr Mc Monagle went on to say:
"That commuters and shoppers who work or shop in the Town also have a responsibility in ensuring that they cause the least amount of inconvenience to residents by using the many car parks that are dotted throughout the Town and parking their cars in non residential areas. I would also ask commuters to consider car sharing as an option which would have two effects, firstly, a lesser number of cars travelling into town and secondly, it can only be good for the environment with a reduction of toxic omissions from fewer cars. We in the Town Council also have a role to play. We must work towards providing extra car parking spaces but we must also create an environment where other modes of travel can be used such as extra bicycle lanes or a proper and functioning town bus service, which I believe will drastically reduce the number of cars about the town.
