Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has today welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Education and Science that Scoil Chonaill Naofa in Bun Beg has been granted approval to proceed to tender for a new building.

He said:

"I welcome the decision by the Minister today and I wish to congratulate the board of management, the teachers, parents, pupils and all those who campaigned tirelessly to secure a new building for the school.

"As a former pupil of the school I know all too well the difficulties faced by pupils and teachers on a daily basis. Some time ago I presented the engineering report on the school to the Minister for Education and Science which showed that the school had unsafe electrics.

"This school has been waiting ten years for action from the department. This is scandalous and something that no school should have to go through. My focus now will be on the 60 other schools in Donegal in similar situations as Scoil Chonaill who have yet to receive the go-ahead for new school buildings.

"I am pleased with the announcement today and I hope that the pupils and teachers of Scoil Chonaill can look forward to a safe and comfortable school environment for years to come."CRÍOCH
