Road Traffic accident at Blacks Bridge

Published: 15 February, 2010

Letterkenny Sinn Fein Councillor Gerry Mc Monagle is once again calling on Letterkenny Town Council to put in place extra road safety measures on the road from Blacks Bridge to Killylastin.

Cllr Mc Monagle was speaking after being contacted by residents in the Chestnut Grove area who were commenting on the latest car accident on the road on Friday night around 8pm. The latest accident resulted in a car going off the road and dropping into a field at a particurly notorious bend which has seen at least a dozen accidents in the last two years thankfully no one was badly hurt in this latest crash.

Having said that residents are still very fearful that a fatality will happen sooner rather than later and say that it is imperative that the council step up to the mark and install the necessary traffic calming measures needed to prevent any further accidents on this road.

Cllr Mc Monagle said:

"It's over a year ago now that I brought a motion forward to Letterkenny Town Council highlighting the danger for motorist and pedestrians using this road. I called for ramps and a safety barrier to put in place along the road to prevent cars going off the road and dropping down into the field which in some places is a drop of eight feet"
Despite the council putting in rumble strips and further signage accidents are still occurring. Whilst it is important that motorist exercise care when driving on any road it is also incumbent on the council to ensure that they also live up to their responsibilities.

. Cllr Mc Monagle concluded by saying:

As a matter of urgency I will be contacting the Town Engineer to ask him to once again look at this road and I will be asking him to put in place the necessary traffic calming measures needed to prevent any further accidents at this spot.
