Sinn Fein Women join National 'Women No to Lisbon Campaign'Published: 22 September, 2009
Women Vote No to Lisbon Campaign to hit the streets of Donegal this weekend.
Sinn Fein elected female representatives will launch their No to Lisbon campaign this weekend and campaign in the towns and villages of Donegal in an effort to secure a No result in the upcoming Lisbon Referendum.
Sinn Fein County Councillor Cora Harvey has said:
"The Suffragettes had to fight and some even died for the right for women to have a vote, it is hard to believe that it is only 91 years since women were first granted the vote in Ireland, and now we find ourselves in a position today that we can't get our vote validated....... and that makes me very angry.
This weekend Sinn Fein female elected representatives will campaign on the streets of Donegal opposing the Lisbon Treaty, we strongly believe that this is a bad deal for Ireland and a bad deal for woman, man and child and we need to get this stopped.
Nationally, women are fighting a very vigorous campaign opposing the Lisbon Treaty and Sinn Fein here in Donegal are behind the women of Ireland all the way. We will hit the streets of Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, Ballybofey, Letterkenny, and Dungloe this weekend and next week and appeal to women to vote No on October 2nd.
We need to do everything we can to stop this treaty being ratified because a better deal is possible, why settle for a botch job that was designed almost 10 years ago in totally different times.
Cllr Harvey continues,
We refuse to be bullied in to Voting Yes because 'Europe has been good to us' we are not voting on a track record, nor are we voting to stay in the EU. We are voting on a treaty that firmly places the interests of business, not people at the heart of the European Project, the Treaty promotes a militarised and a privatised European Union prioritising corporate profits at the expense of public services and workers' rights.
Should this matter to Irish women? The majority of those working in the public sector are women, and we also use public services more than men: health and pregnancy care; dealing with the education of our children; looking after the elderly and infirm; trying to access public services, especially in rural areas and using public transport. The Lisbon Treaty would open the way to 'for profit' private company ownership of so called public services.
Cllr Harvey states:
The Governments Millward Brown IMS research showed that women tended to vote No to Lisbon. Some commentators speculated that our No vote arose from a lack of understanding. Again an insult on our intelligence, having canvassed recently during the local elections the Lisbon Treaty was a common debate and more recently canvassing on Lisbon 2, I can confidently say that the women I spoke to knew exactly why they voted No.
Concluding;
I understand that people are afraid, as am I. I am absolutely terrified that this monster will be ratified because of the scaremongering of those on the 'Yes' side. There is absolutely nothing to fear from voting No on October 2nd, all will remain as it is in terms of our position in Europe, we will continue under the Nice Treaty until a new favourable, democratic and equitable deal is negotiated.
They tell us to vote Yes to make Europe 'more effective and efficient' that's all we hear from the Yes side and off course 'Europe was good to us'. I say to the Yes sider's 'Please get real' we hardly need a referendum to make the powers that be more 'efficient and effective' it's a little more complicated than that. 'Europe was good to us' yes, but I'll tell you, we were also good to Europe, especially our Fisherman.
Finally;
We the Sinn Fein elected women call on the women of Donegal to reject the Lisbon Treaty, We believe that a better Europe is possible, where Equality, Justice, Peace and Solidarity is central and were the interests of ordinary people are paramount. We want a Europe for the people not for profit."
