INDUSRIAL ACTION BY INISHOWEN'S CIVIL SERVANTS JUSTIFIED; LALOR

Published: 9 March, 2002

Industrial action by Inishowen's civil servants justified: Lalor.

Buncrana Sinn Féin Town Councilor Daren Lalor claims last Thursday
26th February one day industrial stoppage by members of
Civil, Public and Services Union (CPSU) was completely justifiable
and should be supported by the unemployed and all those on lower
incomes, either in the public or the private sector.

The Sinn Féin councilor said, last week 83 per cent of the Civil,
Public and Services Union (CPSU) workers voted in favour of industrial
action, with eighty-six per cent of the union's 13,000 members taking
part in the vote. Last Thursdays one-day strike may had consequences for
many of those in our community, as this union has members in almost
every public service department.

Cllr Lalor said, there really is huge anger out there from the public
in general regarding the so-called pension levy on public workers,
let's face it for those concerned it simply mounts to a wage cut. The
Government claim this so-called Pension levy is fair measure and that
the deduction is progressive, yet this is a question of equity. Show me
the fairness in a public worker on €35,000 paying a 6% levy while her
boss on a salary of €350,000 pays only 5%?

We need to put this so-called pension levy into context, while these
workers are asked to take damaging pay cuts our Government are
subsidising both private hospitals and fee paying schools to cost of
millions of Euros of tax payers money, not to mention bailing out the
fat cats within the banking sector.

Cllr Lalor concluded, I would urge the community in the coming weeks
and months not to rise to the bate of those with clear vested
interests that would be delighted to witness a media dog fight between
public and private workers.
