U18's have rights and entitlements - Sinn Féin

Sinn Fein Buncrana Town Cllr Daren Lalor has reminded employers that they have specific obligations when employing U18's during the schools holiday period.
Cllr Daren Lalor said:
"Now, that the school summer holidays have commenced many of our students will be actively looking for temporary employment. While there are clear benefits for both student and the employer alike, it is imperative that young people under 18's are aware of their rights and entitlements.
"All these U18's are covered under the protection of the Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996 which covers various entitlements regarding good safe work practice. This act covers entitlements relating to rest breaks, days off, hours worked per week, etc all depending on the age of the student.
"The minimum wage does apply to young people, for U18's the rate before tax is calculated at 5.36 per hour, with only a few exceptions (family business) employers are legally obliged to meet this requirement. Just on the safety issue alone it is important that students have a clear understanding of their rights and entitlements and more importantly all employers adhere to the 1996 act over the holiday period."
