Decision to seek funding for four bridges welcomed

Sinn Fein Representative for the Milford Electoral Area Donal Cullen has welcomed the decision taken by Donegal County Council to seek funding for the four bridges on the main Milford to Carrigart Road. The four bridges concerned are the Bunlin Bridge, Iron Bridge Carrigart, the Ballyohagan Bridge at the old Barracks in Carrigart and the Stracam Bridge in Carrick.
Sinn Fein Representative Donal Cullen said:
"I received a written reply from Mr. Roche Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government stating that under the 2006 EU. Co-Financed Specific Improvements Grant Scheme Donegal County Council was allocated €I, 642,000 this year, but that the selection of projects submitted did not include work on the bridges.
"These bridges are very narrow and a number of serious accidents have occurred on them. Taking into account the volume of traffic on our roads and the increase in road death I contacted the council asking them to add these bridges to their priority list and if they would consider submitting an application for consideration for funding under the scheme in 2007. In his reply the Executive Engineer for Roads and Transportation outlined the following current position regarding these bridges."
Bunlin Bridge
The Bunlin Bridge is the number 1 priority on the Bridge Widening/Replacement priority list in the Milford Electoral Area. It is planned to include the design and construction of the bridge as part of the EU co-financed scheme over the next few years.
Iron Bridge Carrigart
An allocation of €40,000 has been received for the widening of the Iron Bridge in Carrigart and the design is currently in progress.
The Ballyohagan Bridge at the old Barracks in Carrigart and the Stracam Bridge in Carrick.
Both these bridges are included in the Bridge Widening/Replacement priority list in the Milford Electoral Area and when funding becomes available works will be carried out on these bridges.
Donal Cullen concluded:
"Hopefully, in the near future all these works will be finished bringing greater safety to our roads."
