Donegal Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Message of support to Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR)

Published: 15 May, 2006

"Prior to this planned lobbying of Congress on Wednesday, I once again would like to offer Sinn Féin support to the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR). The ILIR is fighting for the voice of the estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish in the immigration debate, which is currently being discussed in the Senate.

"Over the last number of months I have campaigned vigorously on behalf of the 50,000 undocumented Irish in the States and offered Sinn Féin support to the ILIR campaign. There are increasing fears that new legislation would permanently exclude Irish immigrants from the opportunities offered to earlier Irish immigrants.

"In March I travelled to Boston and New York to speak at several functions on their behalf and met with many of the Irish who would suffer because of this new legislation. Sinn Féin has raised this issue in the Dáil and we will continue to back their proposals in the coming days."
