Town Council to meet twice yearly with Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce

Sinn Fein councillor Gerry Mc Monagle has welcomed his council colleagues support at Monday nights Town Council meeting for his motion calling on the Town Council to meet with the Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce on a twice yearly basis to discuss with them issues of mutual importance.

Speaking at the meeting Cllr Mc Monagle outlined the massive contribution that the chamber makes to the finances of the Towns budget enabling the Town Council to deliver many of our frontline services. The chamber contributes approximately 60% of the Towns budget through payment of their rates. Cllr Mc Monagle said it is only right and proper that we as a Town Council have formal discussions with Letterkenny Chamber to discuss issues that are mutually beneficial to not only the Chamber and Town Council but also those issues that affect the wider community.

In these times of economic decline it is very important that the Council and Chamber work in partnership together to discuss and identify ways and means that we can both help one another through this difficult period. One of the ways we as a council can help stimulate business in Letterkenny is by not imposing a rates increase this year, this we have agreed to do despite the 6% decrease in funding announced by the Environment Minister John Gormley in this year's budget.

The business's of Letterkenny have worked very hard to make Letterkenny the Town that it is and whilst their has been a good relation with the Town Council built up over the years I felt it was about time that we put some formality to this relationship and that we meet on a twice yearly basis to discuss those issues which are of mutual importance especially in the run up to the council striking its rate.

Cllr Mc Monagle concluded by saying that he looked forward to the meetings between the council and chamber in the time ahead and hopes that a strong bond can be developed between the Council and Chamber through these meetings. Working in partnership with the chamber in these difficult times is the only way forward for the businesses and local community to prosper in Letterkenny.
