Sinn Féin calls for halt to anti-community behaviour

Published: 9 May, 2006

Sinn Fein Cllr Gerry McMonagle is calling on the people responsible for setting fire to a rubbish skip at the side of a dwelling in Fairgreen area of the Town in the early hours of Tuesday morning to stop for a minute and consider their actions. He said this fire, in such close proximity to a family home where children were sleeping, could have had tragic consequences especially considering the timing of the incident.

Cllr McMonagle said:

"Resident Associations throughout the Town generally at this time of the year take on to clean up their estates. The Town council who provide the skips facilitates this work. Actions such as those seen last night fly in the face of this community spirit and will, if continued, inevitably lead to a tragedy.

"I would say to those responsible that instead of working against the community, to use their energies to help the community and involve themselves in the clean up campaigns and help make the community a safer and more environmentally friendly place to live. At the end of the day your actions are totally reprehensible and anti community.

"It will only lead to the downgrading of the areas you live in and undo the great work that local residents groups do for their respective areas throughout the Town. It is also a slap in the mouth to the Town Council and its employees who provide this support for the residents. After discussions with the Town Foreman, I know the contempt they have for these mindless idiots but are still very much determined to carry on with their work in partnership with the local resident groups."
