McMonagle and Quinn selected as Sinn Féin candidates

At a packed convention in the Silver Tassie Hotel last evening, Sinn Fein selected sitting Cllr Gerry McMonagle to be their candidate in Letterkenny Town Council and Churchill based trade union representative, Mick Quinn to be their candidate in the Letterkenny/ Milford Electoral Area of Donegal County Council for next year's local elections. Cllr McMonagle was the only candidate nominated for the convention to contest the Letterkenny Town Council election and was endorsed unanimously by the 150 members in attendance. The ticket for the Letterkenny/ Milford Electoral Area was contested by Mick Quinn and another Churchill based candidate, Sean O Donnell. Mick Quinn was elected with 66% of the vote while Sean O Donnell took the remaining 34% of support.
Speaking after his selection, Cllr McMonagle said:
"It has been a privilege to represent the people of Letterkenny as a Sinn Fein councillor over the term of the present council. During that period, my party and I have worked hard to address the challenges faced by the townspeople from community safety to improved water and sewage infrastructure and from defending the services at Letterkenny General Hospital to successfully campaigning for a dual carriageway from Dublin to the town. We submitted our vision document entitled "Letterkenny towards a city" into the Letterkenny Town Plan consultation in 2008 after delivering over 5000 copies into homes across the town in 2007. I pledge to continue that work with the Sinn Féin team and look forward to the campaign ahead".

Speaking after his selection, Mick Quinn said:

"I firstly wish to commend Sean O Donnell for contesting this nomination. This contest has been a healthy exercise for the party locally and has clearly demonstrated democracy in practice. It is also clear from the packed room here this evening that our party has never been stronger in the Letterkenny/ Milford area".
He continued:
" There are major challenges facing my electoral area and Donegal in general. From the burgeoning dole queues that remarkably closed the local social welfare offices in Letterkenny to the spectacle of the primary school where my children were educated, Glenswilly National School, renamed "Waiting for an extension since 1992, Glenswilly National School". Sinn Féin are determined to present a vision for change. A vision that opposes incompetent banks being bailed out with limited conditions while so many of our elderly citizens have their medical cards cruelly stolen from them. A vision that confronts the enriching of wealthy private investors in private clinics, on the backs of our communities health and stands by our public hospital in Letterkenny, opposing cutbacks. Our party are determined to take our message to every street and Townland in the time ahead. We are determined to elect a Sinn Féin councillor in the Milford area for the first time and keep the same level of representation to Letterkenny town of a town and county councillor".
