Senator Pearse Doherty has welcomed the belated government move to ban a number of substances currently on sale in headshops but said the move is still inadequate. Senator Doherty presented today a comprehensive set of proposals which he claims are a real solution to the problem of head shops and said that if adopted, his proposal would effectively bring about conditions in which head shops as we know them could no longer exist. Speaking in the Seanad this afternoon Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty said all parties involved in the negotiations that led to the Hillsborough Agreement should be commended. Senator Doherty said all parties now need to show their support for the implementation of the outstanding elements of the Good Friday Agreement. Read full article

Speaking in the Seanad Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Education Senator Pearse Doherty has called on the Minister for Education and Science not to proceed with cuts to special needs support which will see as much as 1,200 Special Needs Assistants being made redundant by the end of March 2010. Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has described as scandalous the announcement that funding from the government to Mná Tí for hosting Irish language students is to be cut by 5%. Senator Doherty also accused Fianna Fáil senator Brian Ó Domhnaill as being week kneed and unwilling to stand up for his constituents when he claimed in the Seanad that this cut would be happily welcomed by Mná Tí.
